6 SIMPLE STEPS TO SELECT YOUR TILES
1. ENJOY THE PROCESS
Start by gathering ideas.
Browse our project photos, visit local showrooms around Hamilton, look through magazines, or use Pinterest to get a feel for what you like.
Take screenshots or photos on your phone and bring them along. They don’t have to be exact products, they just give us a starting point to help guide you toward something similar that is available here in New Zealand.
2. COME PREPARED
If you are building or renovating, it helps to bring along any samples you already have.
This might include
Benchtop colours
Paint selections
Flooring samples such as carpet or laminate
Tiles often meet other surfaces in your home, so it is important everything works together.
3. TALK TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE
We will help guide you through the selection process and make sure what you choose will work in your space.
There are a few common questions that come up:
Should I use small tiles in a small space
Larger tiles with fewer grout lines usually make a space feel bigger and less cluttered. That said, if you prefer the look of smaller tiles, they can still work when used well.
Should I use grip tiles in wet areas
Grip tiles are designed more for outdoor use. Indoors they can be harder to clean as dirt and soap can build up in the surface. We generally recommend a matt or lappato finish for bathrooms.
Wall tiles vs floor tiles
Wall tiles are softer and not designed for foot traffic. Floor tiles are stronger and can be used on both floors and walls.
4. TAKE SAMPLES HOME
Always take samples home before making a final decision.
Tiles can look completely different depending on lighting, surroundings, and time of day.
By laying them out in your own space for a few days, you will get a much better feel for what works.
5. BE REALISTIC
Tiles will need to be cut to fit your space, so they are not always going to line up perfectly without adjustments.
A good tiler will make this look clean and well finished.
Also, tiles come in a more limited range of colours compared to paint. It is often easier to select your tiles first, then match paint colours to suit.
6. ALLOW ENOUGH TIME
Tile selection and supply can take longer than people expect.
Some tiles need to be ordered in, which can take around a week or more depending on availability.
Tilers are also in high demand, so it is common to wait several weeks before work can begin.
Planning ahead helps keep your project running smoothly.
FINAL NOTE
Choosing tiles is one of the more important parts of your project, as it has a big impact on both the look and long-term use of the space.
Take your time, ask questions, and make sure what you choose works for how you will use the space day to day.
